Canada: Funding in gear for electric-vehicle charging stations

More than 80 applicants for funding support to install electric-vehicle charging stations around the province will learn by the end of the month if their proposal has won approval.

A “good mix” of applications came in from throughout B.C., representing local governments, public institutions and the private sector, such as hotels and shopping centres, Jim Vanderwal, Fraser Basin Council’s senior program manager for climate change and air quality, said from Vancouver Thursday.

The council is administering a $2.74 million Community Charging Infrastructure Fund from the province, with the aim of having 570 charging stations installed by March 31 next year.

Most of the fund will help pay for charging stations, with some money to defray planning efforts around installing infrastructure. The planning initiative attracted 18 applications, Vanderwal said.

Successful applicants can receive funding for 75 per cent of costs, up to $4,000 per station.
