USA: Groups prepare proposals for piece of $53M air quality grant

The Coachella Valley Association of Governments’ plan for a 54-mile, cross-valley paved pathway for bicycles, pedestrians and electric vehicles is just one of a number of proposals vying for a piece of $53 million in grant money coming to offset emissions from a new Palm Springs natural gas power plant. / Courtesy of CVAG

Shelter from the Storm wants about $1 million to make its aging emergency shelter for battered women and their children more energy efficient.

The Coachella Valley Unified School District wants $16.2 million to replace 60 of its pollution-belching diesel buses with cleaner CNG vehicles and install air filters at elementary schools where students have suffered from the stench from a nearby recycling plant.

Palm Springs wants about $6.2 million for programs to put solar panels on a number of city buildings and help residents upgrade their homes with solar panels and well-insulated “cool” roofs.

And, of course, the Coachella Valley Association of Governments wants as much as $40 million to build a 54-mile, cross-valley paved pathway for bicycles, pedestrians and electric vehicles.
