USA: Bob Lutz to Address the Nation’s Utility Fleets on the Electrification of America’s Auto Industry

WILLIAMSBURG, VA, Jun 06, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) — The nation’s leading electric utility fleets are gathered together this week in historic Williamsburg Virginia, as they have done every year for the past 59 years. This year however, for the first time, they will be addressed by one of America’s iconic leaders in the car business, Mr. Bob Lutz, who will speak to them about the electrification of the auto industry. Mr. Lutz, former Vice Chairman of General Motors, is known widely as the father of the Chevy Volt and is credited for America’s resurgence as the world leader in electric vehicles, will speak to the group of fleet managers about the important role America’s utility fleets will play in the wide-spread adoption of electric vehicles.

“We are proud to have Bob Lutz speak at our national conference this year,” said George Survant, President of the Electric Utilities Fleet Managers Conference. “Mr. Lutz is a legend in the industry and a champion of American technology. His leadership has help put this nation on the road to electrification and energy independence,” concluded Survant.

The annual gathering of utility fleet managers provides an opportunity for some of the county’s largest utility fleet managers to review new vehicle technology and equipment for the utility industry.

Of particular interest to the industry this year is the introduction of (eREV) extended range electric vehicle technology by VIA Motors into full size pick-up trucks, the number one selling vehicle in America, and also one of the most widely used vehicles in the utility industry.

VIA introduced two electric work vehicles at the show: an extended cab pick-up truck and cargo van, both with 15 kW of exportable power. The onboard exportable power provides electric utility fleets with emergency response mobile power and additional “smart grid” capabilities.

Since retiring from GM, Mr. Lutz now serves on the board of directors of VIA Motors, to continue his vision of extended range electric vehicle technology into full size vehicles.

About VIA Motors VIA Motors is a privately held electric vehicle development and manufacturing company. VIA has developed a proprietary 650-volt eREV drive system technology designed for full size trucks and SUVs called the VIA V-Drive(TM). VIA employs a streamlined second stage manufacturing process to integrate its proprietary eREV power train into new OEM vehicles, then sells directly to fleets under the VTRUX(TM) brand name. VIA VTRUX deliver up to 40-mile EV range and up to 400-mile extended range, averaging over 100 mpg in typical daily driving. Initially, VIA plans to sell directly to fleets, then later to consumers. VIA plans to scale its technology to many other vehicles and plans to ramp up production over the next few years, adding additional models and sizes.
