Europe: Renault clocks up 14,000 EV orders

French company insists demand is solid as UK figures show just 1,721 electric cars have been registered under the government’s subsidy scheme

Renault has received 14,000 orders across its four-model Z.E. electric car range, the French manufacturer’s global head of electric vehicles revealed earlier this week.
Thierry Koskas said the figure showed consumer demand for all-electric cars was strong, even though overall sales to date in the UK and elsewhere have been slow.

Figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) last week showed just 493 electric cars were purchased between the beginning of the year and the end of May under the government’s plug-in car grant scheme, taking the total number sold since the £5,000 subsidy was introduced in January 2011 to 1,721.
However, along with its partner Nissan, Renault aims to sell 1.5 million electric cars worldwide by 2016 and estimates they could make up 10 per cent of the global market by the end of the decade.
