USA: Roadshow: Plenty of carpool stickers available for Prius, Volt plug-ins

Q I am about to buy a new Prius plug-in. I spoke to DMV to find out if they still have plenty of carpool stickers left, and they said they couldn’t release that information. The state Air Resources Board said they didn’t know. Why is this secret? Should I buy the car?

Doug Mihok

A If getting stickers to drive solo in the carpool lane is one of your main reasons to purchase the plug-in Prius, you’re in luck. This Prius and models of the Chevy Volt (with E, F, G or H in the fifth position of the vehicle identification number) qualify for green stickers that will allow solo drivers in carpool lanes through 2014. Stickers are available to the first 40,000 applicants who purchase or lease those cars. As of March 30, only 176 stickers had been issued, mainly because this Prius model didn’t go on sale until a few weeks ago.

Electric vehicles and those running on hydrogen fuel cells or compressed natural gas qualify for white carpool stickers. There is no limit on those. More than 20,000 have been given out.

Q The roadbed next to the overpass on south Interstate 680 at Sunol Boulevard is subsiding. Caltrans coned off the area, fractured some of the larger pieces that were sticking up, then left it unrepaired. Cars are abruptly changing lanes to avoid the depression. I know they will return to complete repairs, but when?
