Attention electric vehicle owners: There’s one more place in Boulder County to zap your ride. On Thursday, Lafayette unveils a new charging station for green drivers.
But with so few gas-free cars out on the road — fewer than 10,000 of the more than 12 million cars sold in the United States last year were purely electric — it could be a lonely pit stop for some time to come.
The news for electric cars hasn’t been auspicious of late — sales in the United States fell from March to April, and General Motors temporarily halted the production of its Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid due to poor sales. GM also fended off bad publicity last year after the federal government launched an investigation into the safety of the Volt’s battery.
But that hasn’t frightened off communities in Boulder and Broomfield counties, which together have more than a dozen car charging stations in public and private venues, with more to come. And on the campus of the University of Colorado on Thursday, enthusiasts will celebrate Electric Vehicle Day by holding an expo of the latest technology.
Curt Cheesman, director of recreation and facility management for Lafayette, acknowledged that the new 240-volt charging station at the Lafayette Public Library, 775 W. Baseline Road, won’t initially get around-the-clock use, but he said it places the city firmly on the side of municipalities that embrace responsible energy usage.
There is no charge to use the station.
