USA: Electric car makers can sell credits in California

Electric car makers are finding a new set of buyers: other car companies. But they may not actually want to take a supply of electric cars. Rather, they want the credits in such places as California.

California is requiring that automakers sell a certain percentage of emission-free cars this year, meaning electrics. But it’s allowing automakers to trade credits based on those sales. An automaker that buys credits from another won’t have to make an electric vehicle. It can just buy the credits.

Nissan is ready to play that game. The maker of the electric Leaf tells Bloomberg News that it may sell credits earned from its sales.
