New Data: Profile of Chevy Volt Buyers

n a recent survey done for GM, the results show that almost 70 percent of all Chevy Volt buyers traded in a non-GM vehicle when purchasing their new hybrid Volt. One of the most surprising pieces of information in the survey concerned the types of cars that are traded in for a Volt, the most common being another hybrid, the Toyota Prius. After that, the “runners up” are Toyota Camry, Honda Civic, and the BMW 3 Series. As far as GM is concerned, this is positive news on several levels.

Not only are Volt buyers new customers for GM, but they are coming from a rival car model, the Prius. A typical customer comment was this, from a Santa Monica resident who recently bought a Volt, “I owned a Prius for six years and loved it. I was one of the first to sign up for the plug-in. While I was waiting for it to ship, I learned that the Volt would quality for the HOV stickers, so I did a test drive. I fell in love then. It’s faster, better appointed and gets far better gas mileage than the Prius (or the plug-in). I’ve driven it over 1,000 miles and I’ve only used five gallons of gas.”
