China: China’s BYD plays down fire in electric car

Company and industry officials on Wednesday played down the significance of fire in a BYD electric car after it was hit at high-speed by another vehicle in an accident that killed three people.

Cui Dongshu, vice secretary of the China Passenger Car Association, said the collision between the BYD E6 electric taxi and a sports car travelling at an estimated speed of up to 180 kilometres per hour was “unusual” and involved “excessive force.”

“After being hit by a huge, excessive force, anything could happen,” Cui told dpa. “I don’t think we should suspect (quality problems) just because of one incident.”

The taxi driver and two passengers died in the accident in the southern city of Shenzhen in the early hours of Saturday.
