USA/China: Big deal could lead to cheapest electric car yet

California-based electric-car maker Coda is getting a boost today in announcing a deal to co-produce a new electric model with China’s Great Wall Motors. The two say it will be the most affordable all-electric car in the U.S. yet.

It could be great partnership. Coda has American know-how when it comes to electrics, yet keeps a strong connection to Asia. Its battery packs and car bodies are imported from China before final assembly in California. Great Wall is one of China’s fastest-growing automakers, but hasn’t made the strides in electrics of some of its competitors. The Chinese government is trying to make electrics a priority because of the growing nation’s serious air pollution problem.
