USA: Salinas unveils electric-vehicle charging station

In a long-awaited bow to the future — and a hope for a region with cleaner air — Salinas officials gathered Monday to dedicate the city’s first public electric-vehicle charging station.

Though other California cities are further along in the development of charging station networks than Salinas, the station installed at the curb of Lincoln Avenue outside of City Hall is designed to be a symbol as much as a convenient source of juice for those driving high-tech all-electric cars.

Mayor Dennis Donohue praised the station.

“We have to have the infrastructure in place and this is a good start,” Donohue said. “It is symbolic and appropriate the first one is here at City Hall. There’s no doubt that all electric vehicles will increasingly be part of the mix we see out there on the road.”

The $6,000 charging station was purchased by the city from funds provided by the Monterey Bay Unified Air Pollution Control District.
