USA: ?Parking area in downtown Boston will be focused on electric-vehicle charging stations Read more: Parking area in downtown Boston will be focused on electric-vehicle charging stations

The site of the former Mobil station continues to contribute to blight at the edge of the Bulfinch Triangle – a black mark on a neighborhood that Boston officials have been eager to rejuvenate ever since the Central Artery and the Green Line were buried underground.
But the high-profile parcel at the corner of Merrimac and Friend streets – essentially an overflow parking lot for TD Garden events these days – is getting an unusual makeover: In August, it will become a central parking area for electric car owners.
Property owner Dinosaur Capital Partners and Streetline Inc. unveiled plans to open what Dinosaur calls a “Green Park & Ride” in August. Boston-based Dinosaur says six of 12 parking spaces there will have electric chargers, and others will be added as demand requires.
Dinosaur will make its revenues off parking fees (it can take four to eight hours to charge a car). The electricity will be provided for free. You won’t have to own an electric car to park there, but it would help if you did. Drivers of electric cars and hybrids will get a 10-percent discount on parking rates, while drivers of gas-guzzlers (models that get 15 mpg or less) with be hit with a 10-percent surcharge.
Using technology from Foster City, Calif.-based Streetline, Dinosaur will provide motorists with real-time information about which parking spaces and charging stations are open, using a network of wireless sensors located in each parking space. The site will also feature a kiosk with a TD Bank ATM and a cafe.
Streetline and Dinosaur Capital are billing this as Boston’s “first fully-dedicated electric vehicle charging and parking facility.” The Lenox Hotel already boasted (last fall) that it installed the city’s first curbside charging station.
But charging stations are popping up all over the Boston area this year. Most are being built through the ChargePoint program, a federally-subsidized initiative overseen by Coulomb Technologies. State officials will highlight a newly-installed ChargePoint station at the Porter Square shopping center tomorrow as they announce a new program for electric-vehicle license plates.
