USA: CHARGING STATION OPENS FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES

The North County Transit District has installed seven electric car charging stations at the Oceanside Transit Center as part of a push by a San Francisco-based company to install thousands of the stations across the country.

The charging complex, fueled by solar panels that sit atop covered parking spaces where drivers can charge their cars for free, is the largest in North County and the only public charging station between Encinitas and Orange County.

Balboa Park, Chula Vista, Escondido and several other areas in San Diego County already are home to electric car charging stations. Another 1,400 stations are expected to be installed countywide, according to the transit district.

ECOtality, a San Francisco-based clean technology company, installed the Oceanside charging stations at no cost to the district, according to a news release. The company’s mission to install 15,000 charging stations nationwide is backed by a $115 million U.S. Department of Energy grant.
