USA: Car enthusiast buys first CODA electric sedan in San Diego

John Brooks’ daily driver has been a 1941 Ford business coupe, but it has competition with the CODA, which has a driving range of 88 miles, the company says.

John Brooks II has always been into old cars. His daily driver has been a 1941 Ford business coupe that’s in pretty decent shape. But his old Ford has competition now that Brooks, 54, just took delivery of a 2012 CODA electric sedan.

Brooks is the first CODA owner in San Diego and the fourth buyer so far. The L.A.-based company has four dealerships, including Irvine and Los Angeles.

The two modes of transportation may seem complete opposites, but the EV is an ideal candidate for Brooks, who has thrown his hat into the ring to lead the 51st Congressional District.

A retired Special Agent for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Brooks doesn’t drive much more than 30 to 35 miles a week, he says. And when he does have to drive farther than the 88- to 125- mile range of his five-seat CODA, he’ll rent a car.

Buying an EV has been on his list since 2008 when he put down a deposit on an Aptera, which was a three-wheeler proposed by the now-defunct Carlsbad-based company. (And he still hasn’t had his deposit returned.)
