USA: Borgess becomes first Michigan hospital to offer electric vehicle charging stations

KALAMAZOO, MI – On Friday, Borgess Medical Center will become the first hospital in Michigan to offer electric vehicle charging stations.
The unveiling, first at the Borgess Medical Center on Gull Road and then the Borgess-Pipp Hospital in Plainwell, is just part of a morning’s events that kick off at Western Michigan University at 10:30 a.m.
W.M.U. President John Dunn will be cutting the ribbon on its 15 new charging stations, all of which are powered by a 50 kilowatt photovoltaic solar array, said Peter Strazdas, associate vice president of facilities management for W.M.U.
The university’s fleet of five electric vehicles, as well as its electric hybrid utility truck, also will be on hand. All three locations Friday will be showcasing electric Chevy Volts, Nissans Leafs and Ford Transit Connects, on loan from area dealers.
Borgess’ chargers will be free to the public until Dec. 31, 2013, in an effort to promote electrical vehicle ownership.
The new chargers, when combined with earlier vehicle chargers downtown and W.M.U’s original five stations, help Kalamazoo offer more infrastructure for electric car owners than other cities of its size, said Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell in a phone interview.
It also marks perhaps the most tangible effort to date of the Southwest Michigan Regional Sustainability Compact the city signed in 2009 with partners including Borgess, W.M.U. and the cities of Portage and Battle Creek.
