UK: Luton firm is charging up for electric future

AT the moment there are more electric car charging posts in the UK than there are electric cars – but a Luton company is ready to lead a transport revolution.

Chargemaster, in Capability Green, reckons over the next few years there will be an explosion in the number of electric cars on the roads, using its products.

“Next year looks very exciting,” said entrepreneur David Martell, who set the company up four years ago.

“We will see more and more electric cars on the streets as the manufacturers bring in more models.”

The company held a Future Charging Technologies Day on April 26 where it showcased its products.

Strict rules on carbon reduction across Europe mean car makers are having to introduce ever more environmentally friendly vehicles. Over the next 24 months there are some 30 new electric cars coming to market in the UK.

Chargemaster already employs 35 people, plus maintenance staff, from its Luton base and another centre at Pulloxhill, in mid Beds. Its turnover is growing apace, currently standing at £7million a year, with more than half of its charging posts being exported to Europe.
