Uh-huh, but BMW is clearly desperate in wanting to warm up its ‘I’ car offensive, first previewed with the i3 city car and i8 supercar.

The i8 Spyder could be in production by 2015.

The i8 Spyder concept car you see here is essentially the open-top version of last year’s i8 Coupe, itself an evolution of the Vision Efficient Dynamics study car that was first shown to the world in 2009.

However, you could consider the i8 Spyder as the third stage of an evolution leading to the real thing, which is due in 2014.

– No wonder it has solid doors…

That’s right, and it’s one of the features that have changed compared to the i8 and Vision ED cars, both of which employed transparent portals.

The interior has also evolved, getting closer to the showroom article. Note the familiar gearstick, 8.8-inch multi-function display and the iDrive button on the console.

The interior is getting closer to the real thing.
But what isn’t clear yet is the Spyder’s removable roof. Some sources suggest that one made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic _ as used elsewhere in the car’s body _ could be used instead of a traditional tonneau cover.

– The engine is the same, right?
