USA: Use of electric charging stations growing in Knoxville

Driving an electric car doesn’t have to be a “wussy situation.”

Leslie Grossman said that’s why she converted her 1997 Jeep Wrangler to an electric car.

“You can have really cool cars that are electric and have a blast driving them,” she said.

Grossman is part of a growing group of drivers going electric in Knoxville.

From March to December 2011, the number of charging stations in Knoxville grew from one to 105. That’s second in Tennessee only to Nashville, and greater than Memphis and Chattanooga’s respective totals, according to a U.S. Department of Energy report.

Over that time, more than 7,100 charges were logged here at stations monitored by DOE, twice those recorded in Chattanooga.

And 28 more charging stations are expected in Knoxville by June, including 10 solar charging stations in partnership with Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
