USA: Portland adopts electric vehicles, Mayor Sam Adams sticks to his Prius: Portland City Hall roundup

The city of Portland is adding electric Nissan Leaf vehicles to its fleet, but you won’t see Mayor Sam Adams tooling around in one. Not yet, anyway.

Since last September, Portland has thrown down $379,500 on 11 of the $34,500 vehicles. The Bureau of Planning and Sustainability got the first one.

But other city bureaus soon followed.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation, Fire & Rescue and the Bureau of Environmental Services each have two. Three belong to the citywide motor pool. And the Portland Water Bureau has one Nissan Leaf, too.

A U.S. Department of Energy grant covered 90 percent of the $39,000 cost of installing 11 charging stations, a spokeswoman for the city, Kelly Ball, said.

Mayor Sam Adams, meanwhile, is sticking with his Prius hybrid, his spokeswoman, Amy Ruiz, said this week. However, one member of his staff — Katja Dillmann, transportation policy adviser — urged him unsuccessfully to upgrade, according to a May 3, 2011 email.
