USA: Plugging in downtown: Hotel guests can get a charge

Mende Alford hopes travelers – and their cars – get a real charge out of their next stay at Old Capitol Inn.

The downtown Jackson hotel has installed an electric-vehicle charging station in its parking lot for drivers whose cars run on electricity.

The station is free to hotel guests with overnight stays but $5 per hour for non-guests who want to charge their vehicles.

“A lot of Mississippians don’t have electric vehicles, but a lot of travelers who pass through (do),” Alford said. “I’m trying to go a little greener.”

A number of hotels in New Orleans and in the western U.S. have introduced charging stations that seem to have caught on with guests, she said, adding Old Capitol Inn is the first hotel in Mississippi to feature a charger.
