USA: Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Installed In Bloomington

A Nissan Leaf charges at an electric charging station. The Leaf is one of the car models that runs largely off electricity rather than gasoline

Electric vehicle charging stations are now available in two downtown Bloomington parking garages.

When President Barack Obama campaigned in 2008 he pledged to have one million alternative-energy vehicles on the roads by 2015. As the industry grows, communities are beginning to invest in charging stations for electric cars.

Bloomington Sustainability Director Jacqui Bauer says the charging stations in two Bloomington parking garages are part of a pilot program.

“It will let us evaluate the demand for electric vehicle charging stations ,and it will also allow us to take steps toward diversifying our transportation system,” she says.

Duke energy owns the charging systems and charges 50-cents per hour. Bauer says electric vehicles can have a big impact on a power grid and Duke wants to be able to measure how that will affect the company’s operations.
