USA: Electric Car Chargers Coming to New Canaan

Electric vehicle chargers like this one are expected to be installed in New Canaan this summer, according to the Department of Public Works.

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Owners of electric cars who visit downtown New Canaan will soon be able to charge their rides while doing business in the town center.

The town’s Department of Public Works is set to add a pair of electric-charging stations at two downtown parking lots. As a participant in a Connecticut Light & Power program, New Canaan will install a charging station at the Morse Court lot between Main Street and South Avenue. A second unit will be placed at the Park Street lot near New Canaan Town Hall.

Assistant public works director Tiger Mann said his department must receive approval from the Board of Selectmen to enroll in the program and to hire a contract to install the charging unit. The town will not have to pay for the units, worth about $3,000 each.

“The thought is if you start building these things and they (electric cars) will come,” Mann said. “It’s inevitable that there will be more of them.”

Drivers will be able to charge their cars for free, and three parking spaces will be set aside to accommodate charging, Mann said. Drivers will still have to pay for parking. The Morse Court unit is expected to be installed by June 30; the second should be up and running by September.
