USA: Drivers can plug in and shop

Drivers of electrical vehicles are now able to plug in at three public charging stations in Solvang, the first to be installed in Santa Barbara County through a public-private partnership intended to encourage the use of electric cars.

In Solvang, the program is also intended to bolster tourism, the city’s primary industry, by drawing electric-vehicle owners to town and giving them something to do while the car charges.

Hybrid gasoline-electric vehicles have all the range of a gasoline engine, but some purely electrical vehicles can go no more than 70 to 100 miles without recharging.

A ceremony Thursday morning showed off the charging station in the Solvang Veterans Memorial Building parking lot and described the ChargePoint America program.

The charging stations, with two hookups each, have also been installed in Solvang’s Parking Lot 1 on Alisal Road near Copenhagen Drive and Parking Lot 3 on Mission Drive near Fourth Place.
