USA: City parking garage prepares for electric car charger

Rim Cherry, manager at the High Hanover Parking facility in Portsmouth, unpacks a new electric car charger that is being installed in the garage over the next several days.

PORTSMOUTH — Electric car owners will soon have a place to plug in and charge up their vehicles while visiting the city.

Installation of the city’s new electric vehicle charging station began Friday. The station, donated by the local Nissan dealership, is being installed in the reserve parking area near the Hanover Street entrance to the municipal garage. The city is one of four municipalities in the Northeast to receive the donation from the car manufacturer.

The new Class 2 electric vehicle charging station is expected to be functional by Wednesday, according Parking and Transportation Director Jon Frederick.

The charging station was accepted by the City Council in January. Frederick said the gift from Port City Nissan will allow electric car users to travel to the city and not be concerned with where they can charge their vehicle for the ride home. He said the station goes along with the city’s sustainability efforts.

“It increases the web of accessibility of electric vehicle owners,” he said. “It gives them legs. It gives them an opportunity to park and then enjoy the city while their vehicle gets refreshed.”

The charging station will accommodate models such as the Nissan Leaf, Chevrolet Volt, Ford Focus Electric, Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid, Ford C-Max Energi and Mitsubishi “i.”

According to the local Nissan dealership, a full charge takes about seven hours. The charging station can be found through a telematics system that interacts with the vehicle’s onboard navigation system to show electric car owners where chargers are located. There is also a smartphone application that directs them to the nearest charging station.
