USA: Greenville’s electric vehicle ‘ecosystem’ praised

A General Electric executive told an international audience at the TD Convention Center on Monday that while other cities tout themselves as “green,” Greenville is “putting their money where their mouth is” by helping to develop an electric vehicle “ecosystem.”

The comments came from Jake Ring, chief marketing officer for GE Energy Management, during the first full day of an electric vehicle conference that runs until Thursday.

The conference, sponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, has drawn corporate and academic researchers from around the world.

During a talk on infrastructure for electric vehicles, Ring referred to Greenville’s role in a public/private partnership to offer electric cars downtown and at Greenville/Spartanburg International Airport.

Local companies have agreed to offer the Nissan Leafs or Chevrolet Volts to employees and visitors traveling to and from the airport.

Downtown, members of the public will be able to rent some of the cars by the hour.

The program is being coordinated by GE with help from Enterprise, the rental car company, and Greenville city government.

Ring told his audience he’s not aware of any other such initiative in the country.
