Europe/Japan: BMW, Toyota partner on lithium-ion EV battery research

BMW and Toyota are joining forces to produce the next generation lithium-ion batteries for the electric cars they both have in the pipeline.

In an announcement made jointly in Munich and Tokyo, the two automakers formally signed an agreement on what’s described as long-term “collaborative research in the field of next-generation lithium-ion battery cells” for next-generation environment-friendly vehicles and technologies.

The research is charged with (pardon my pun) increasing the performance and capacity of lithium-ion battery cells through the use of new combinations of materials for cathodes, anodes and electrolytes.

BMW is introducing a new line of EV cars, called the iSeries, with the i3 ‘city car’ and i8 sedan. And Toyota – as we all know – put hybrids on the world map with the Prius.

BMW is scheduled to introduce the i3 in 2013, and the i8 in 2014. Toyota is launching the plug-in EV Prius soon, too.
