Europe: Audi A3 plug-in hybrid planned

Audi will add a plug-in hybrid version of the redesigned A3 in 2014, CEO Rupert Stadler said Tuesday at the Geneva motor show.

The luxury brand hasn’t specified which A3 body style will receive the plug-in technology, nor if it might come to the United States. But Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen also said “it would be our intention to bring the full range of technologies” to the U.S. market.

The next-generation A3 hatchback arrives in European showrooms in September.

The show car offers a glimpse at the sedan version coming to the U.S. market for the 2014 model year 2014, replacing the outgoing 4-door hatchback.

The A3 will be sold as a sedan only in the United States.

The next-generation A3 is lighter than its predecessor and will be built off VW Group’s MQB modular platform, which also underpins the VW Golf.

The outgoing A3 was launched in 2003 and arrived in the United States as a 2006 model.
