USDOE Creates Batteries and Energy Storage Research Hub A:

The Department of Energy (DOE) has launched its fourth Energy Innovation Hub since 2010.

On Tuesday, Energy Secretary Steven Chu said the DOE will make $120 million available for battery and energy storage research over the next five years.

The Department will invest $20 million of this in the Batteries and Energy Storage Hub which it will task with advancing “cutting-edge” battery and energy storage technologies which can be applied across the energy sector including the electrical grid, renewable energy integration and electric and hybrid vehicle development.

With this announcement, the DOE is seeking applications from non-profit organizations, private firms, universities and national laboratories which the Department will select from to form its latest team.

With hopes of spurring revolutionary new technologies, the sights for the new hub are set pretty high. The DOE says “the ultimate goal will be to surpass the current technical limits for electrochemical energy storage and reduce the risk level enough for industry to further develop the innovations discovered by the hub and deploy these new technologies into the marketplace.”
