USA: Tucson tech: All-electric Ford Focus expected in local dealerships in September

Tucson will have to wait a little longer for an all-electric car with a Detroit nameplate.

But Ford’s Focus Electric should start showing up in local showrooms a soon as September, based on recent comments from Ford.

Deliveries of Ford’s first plug-in electric to Tucson and 18 other initial markets were supposed to start this spring, after limited deliveries in California and New York last year.

The $40,000 Focus Electric will compete head-on with the Nissan Leaf, which arrived in Tucson amid much buzz last spring.

Ford started taking purchase reservations for the Focus Electric through dealers in November, and in mid-December the automaker announced the start of production of the Focus Electric at its Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Mich.

Asked about the apparent delay, Ford has said it was always its plan to ramp up production, if not deliveries, this spring.

At an auto conference in Dearborn, Mich., last week, a senior Ford official said the Focus Electric should start becoming available in the 19 initial markets starting around September, according to Michigan Live, the website of the Grand Rapids (Mich.) Press and several affiliated newspapers.

After a panel discussion at the Automotive Megatrends USA 2012, Mike Tinskey, Ford associate director for global electric vehicle infrastructure, told that the company is in the “ramp-up phase” to get the Focus Electric to consumers.
