USA: Save $263,000 by Driving an EV Charged by Solar

Nordby’s chart suggests that an electric vehicle driver that installs a 2-kW solar photovoltaic system will only pay $12,000 in “fuel” costs over the next 50 years.

Peder Nordby, an electric vehicle enthusiast and proud lessee of a BMW ActiveE, whipped together a graphic comparing the 50-year “cost of fuel” between a gasoline vehicle and a solar-charged electric automobile. Nordby openly admits that the graph, posted on his blog, is overly simplified and that its omits external elements, including protection of oil, environmental costs and numerous other factors. But as Nordby points out, the true “cost of fuel” over a 50-year period for a conventional gasoline-fueled vehicle is astronomical.
