USA: Peoria gets public charging stations for electric vehicles

PEORIA — Bradley University has installed what might be the first public charging stations for electric vehicles in Peoria — outside of auto dealers.

“As ownership of electric cars increases, there will be a growing need for such power stations,” said Gary Anna, Bradley vice president for business affairs.

The university recently installed three charging stations, located in two of the school’s parking decks.

Bradley charges for use of its charging stations: 75 cents an hour (all major credit cards accepted). A complete recharge takes three to four hours.

Other metropolitan areas such as Bloomington-Normal have charged ahead when it comes to supplying public outlets. About 50 free charging stations are expected to be in operation in Bloomington-Normal by the end of the year, said Mercy Davison, a Normal town planner.
