USA: Car charging is free in Montpelier

MONTPELIER — Anyone with an electric vehicle can now charge it for free at City Hall.

Green Mountain Power has installed a vehicle charging station in a parking space behind City Hall.

For one year, the electricity is free, and there’s also no need to feed the parking meter when charging an electric vehicle.

City Manager William Fraser said in a news release that he hopes this charging station will help increase the market for electric vehicles in Vermont, which are billed as better for the environment than those that run on fossil fuel, such as gasoline.

According to Green Mountain Power CEO Mary Powell, 47 percent of Vermont’s greenhouse gas emissions come from transportation.

Green Mountain Power has also installed electric vehicle charging stations at St. Michael’s College in Colchester and Healthy Living Market in South Burlington.
