UK: Plug-in Ford Mondeo due for 2013

Ford of Britain is set to offer its next-generation Mondeo with a plug-in hybrid version good for considerably more than 100mpg.

The new model range is not due until spring 2013 and will launch initially with frugal 1.6 diesel and 1.6 Ecoboost petrol engines.

However, Ford has confirmed there will be an electrically assisted large car in its European range by 2013 and, under its new ‘One Ford’ global car policy, already unveiled the Mondeo’s all-but identical US counterpart the Fusion with production hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions.

Of the two hybrids revealed at January’s Detroit motor show, the plug-in hybrid model is most likely, given the clear mpg advantage it creates versus regular petrol/electric models and current diesel offerings.
