USA: You’re Invited! Speak Out for Strong Fuel Economy Standards

President Obama recently announced new fuel efficiency and emission standards for light-duty vehicles for model years 2017-25. These new standards will increase fuel economy standards for cars and light trucks to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025, effectively doubling the fuel efficiency of America’s fleet.

The President’s announcement was supported by a broad group of stakeholders, including auto manufacturers, auto workers, the state of California, and national security and environmental groups.

But there is more work to be done.

These new fuel economy rules will be finalized in June, but only after the administration solicits public comments. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will hold three public hearings on these new rules over the next week, including a hearing in downtown San Francisco on January 24.

Will you join us at the Hyatt at Fisherman’s Wharf in downtown San Francisco next week to tell the Obama Administration that you support these new rules?

You can participate in two ways:
•Deliver a brief comment at the hearing to express why you support strong fuel economy standards. If you are interested in testifying, please let us know by filling out this form and we’ll sign you up to speak. You can even request some times that are convenient for you that day (between 10 am and 7 pm). The hearing will be at:

The Hyatt at Fisherman’s Wharf
555 North Point Street
San Francisco, CA 94133
•Join us for our press event at noon. We are working with a number of organizations and businesses to demonstrate widespread support for these new fuel economy rules. The press event will be around the corner from the hearing, so sign up to deliver your testimony and join us before or after you speak. The event will be at:

International Longshore & Warehouse Union, Parking Lot
400 North Point Street
San Francisco, CA 94133

The new fuel efficiency standards will make America more energy independent, save consumers money at the pump, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, create high-quality U.S. jobs, and strengthen our economy by stimulating innovation in advanced vehicle technologies. Come help us tell the Obama Administration that Americans want it to stay strong and oppose any weakening of these rules.

The hearing will begin at 10 am and close when everyone has had a chance to speak, so be sure to let us know when you’d like to testify, and we’ll fit you in.

We truly hope that you will join us in San Francisco on January 24th! Again, if you are interested in testifying please sign up by filling out this short form.

See you on Tuesday!

Thank you,

Phyllis Cuttino
Director, Pew Clean Energy Program
