Toyota’s NS4 plug-in hybrid concept car shows how Toyota aims to expand on Prius’ success to be the world leader in fuel efficiency.

Toyota touted its expanding line of eco-friendly vehicles on Tuesday, introducing a new plug-in hybrid concept called the NS4 and showing off the newest and smallest member of its Prius family.

The NS4 plug-in hybrid concept illustrates how Toyota is aiming to be the world leader in fuel efficiency, extending its ambitions beyond its successful Prius brand.

Jim Lentz, president and chief operating officer of Toyota Motor Sales USA, told journalists at the North American International Auto Show that by the middle of the decade the automaker plans to transfer its plug-in hybrid technology into other models beyond the Prius. It also aims to launch a midsize sedan that runs on hydrogen fuel cells.
