USA: Consumers Energy: Michigan power grid ready if electric vehicles become mainstream

GRAND RAPIDS — Days ahead of a public hearing in Detroit on the Obama Administration’s proposed clean car standards, Consumers Energy representatives want customers to know that their grid is ready for as many electric vehicles as automakers can throw their way.

Scott Weber, director of alternative energy solutions for the utility, told a group of environmental activists gathered for a press conference at Calder Plaza on Thursday that the company was “confident” going forward in the capacity of their system to handle electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, which, whether the market is prime or not, are going to begin rolling off assembly lines in greater numbers.

Although some analysts are saying hybrid and electric vehicles are still years from being in the mainstream, automakers are throwing billions into their production and development, in part, based on tough new fuel efficiency standards being imposed by the Obama Administration.
