Europe: Valmet car plant stakes its future on electricity

The Valmet Automotive plant in Uusikaupunki on Finland’s west coast is among those companies currently taking part in electric vehicle projects in Finland.
Along with the other vehicles that are scheduled to enter the traffic in the Great Helsinki area, we shall hopefully be seeing Fisker Karma sports cars and small Think City cars manufactured in Uusikaupunki.
Valmet wants further empirical information on the use of electric cars, because it believes the company’s future is strongly tied up to the development of these vehicles.

Before long, the cars will come down in price to a point where ordinary consumers can afford them and will give them a closer look, or so Valmet are wagering.
The factory has to develop new and specialised expertiese, in order to be able to compete successfully in the very tough world of automotive design and manufacturing.
The Uusikaupunki plant is currently manufacturing plug-in hybrid Fisker Karma supercars under licence from the American company Fisker Automotive.
