USA: L.A. firm to lead NWI electric vehicle market study

A national developer of electric vehicle charging station networks said Thursday it received a contract from NIPSCO to lead a market study that will help determine ideal locations for publicly available charging posts.

Los Angeles-based 350Green LLC is expected to produce a plug-in electric vehicle market penetration study and infrastructure plan. The contract amount and other terms were not disclosed.

The study should be complete by Jan. 7, according to 350Green.

Merrillville-based NIPSCO is funding the venture partially as a tool for economic development, but also to help improve its environmental profile. The utility’s plans are part of a pledge to improve its environmental profile as a result of a January settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency over Clean Air Act violations.

Despite Northwest Indiana having a low rate of adoption for electric vehicles, advocates believe improving the piecemeal public charging framework would help the region catch up with cities, including Indianapolis and Chicago.

350Green designs, builds and operates charging station networks. It also has operations in multiple states and partnerships with firms including Walgreens and Simon Property Group.
