Canada: MTS Adds Battery-Powered Electric Cars to its Portfolio

MTS has added two battery-powered, zero-emission Nissan Leaf electric cars to its line of eight eco-friendly vehicles. The Nissan Leaf received the recognition at the New York International Auto Show as being the 2011 World Car of the Year and is globally the first cost-effective, all-electric, mass market vehicle. In Manitoba there are four Nissan Leaf cars and in Canada, there are 111.

Kelvin Shepherd, MTS president stated that MTS takes pride in having its name on these eco-friendly and novel cars. He added that when a vehicle is branded as MTS, it will be known that the vehicle will help minimize greenhouse gas emissions in Manitoba. The economy is also benefited if fossil fuel is replaced with renewable and green energy that is locally produced.

Replacement of larger and older fuel consuming vehicles with less emission and fuel efficiency is in line with the Green Plan of MTS Allstream, which includes a goal of reduction in greenhouse gas. The Company will minimize its absolute GHG emissions by 20% by the year, 2020, beginning from a 2008 baseline of a total of 17,326 t of GHG emissions.
