Canada: Electric cars arrive in N.S.

Purchasing process, learning curve steep
A couple of the highly anticipated economy electric vehicles from Mitsubishi have arrived at the Autoport in Eastern Passage and the local dealer expects to have them in about a week.

“We cannot accept delivery until we have our Stage 2 electric charging station in place,” Benji Young, assistant sales manager at Metro Mitsubishi on Wyse Road in Dartmouth, said Thursday.

The dealership is expecting to eventually have three of the 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV vehicles for sale as part of the national rollout of what the manufacturer claims is the most affordable electric vehicle available in Canada.

A standard i-MiEV starts at about $33,000.

However, not everyone can order one.

A potential purchaser must participate in a five-step application process, including an interview, completion of a questionnaire and the obtaining of an approval and estimate from a qualified electrician indicating they have a suitable place to install the required vehicle charger.

“It is important purchasers fully understand the unique benefits and challenges of owning an electric vehicle,” said Young.
