USA: ClipperCreek unveils demand response system for vehicle charging station

Electric vehicle charging station producer ClipperCreek has unveiled a new system that will allow utilities to measure charging consumption and ensure grid reliability.

The California-based company has teamed up with software firm Silver Spring Networks to develop the CS-40 charge station, which features two-way communications technology called Direct-to-Grid.

The grid-connected CS-40 uses Silver Spring UtilityIQ back-office software, which the company said would help utilities to manage the drain on the grid during peak demand times.

“We feel strongly that utilities need to have insight into the EV charging load,” said Dave Packard, ClipperCreek President. “The combined ClipperCreek and Silver Spring solution will allow utilities to seamlessly manage their load at the granularity necessary to ensure reliability of the grid.”

Software enhancements to Silver Spring’s open, unified Smart Energy Platform will include expanded support for electric vehicle charge management to reduce the risk of new peak loads and encourage customer participation in Demand Response programs, ClipperCreek said.
