USA: May Initiatives to Improve Electric Car Use Signed into Law

Two pieces of legislation co-sponsored by state Rep. Karen May (D-Highland Park) aimed at increasing the use of electric vehicles in Illinois were recently signed into law by Governor Pat Quinn.

“Promoting the use of electric cars is not only environmentally friendly, it is economically responsible” May said. “This measure will help promote the use of electric cars in Illinois and increase options for environmentally-friendly transportation.”

Public Act 97-0089 creates an advisory council to investigate and recommend strategies to the governor and the General Assembly on ways to implement and promote the use of electric vehicles including potential infrastructure changes the increased use of electric vehicles may bring. May also helped pass Public Act 97-0090 allowing car sharing organizations like I-GO to take advantage of grant funding available through the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency for alternative fuels vehicles if they add electric cars to their fleets.
