USA: Investment boosts Odyne’s hybrid truck battery project

A Waukesha developer of plug-in hybrid technology for work trucks is expecting to expand with investment and supply agreements involving Johnson Controls Inc.’s battery business.

Odyne Systems develops modular plug-in hybrid systems for medium and heavy duty trucks.

The companies announced that Johnson Controls would invest in Odyne to fund expansion and accelerate broad commercialization of Odyne’s hybrid systems.

At the same time, Odyne designated Johnson Controls-Saft as a “preferred supplier” of lithium-ion battery systems for Odyne’s plug-in hybrid system.

Odyne says its system boosts a large truck’s efficiency through operation of the hybrid system on the road, as well as through use of the battery system at a job site. The system is designed to be installed on new and existing vehicles.

Development of the plug-in technology in Wisconsin began two years ago, when the parent company of truck maker Dueco Inc. of Waukesha bought the assets and intellectual property of Odyne.
