New phone app aims to ease electric car drivers’ ‘range anxiety’

“Running on empty” is both a great Jackson Browne song and a rite of passage no driver would care to repeat.

But you’ve probably done it. There’s no worse feeling than sitting in your car and anxiously eyeing the gas gauge as it hovers below the empty line.

With purely electric vehicles now hitting the streets in appreciable droves, “running on fumes” is no longer an issue, but a looming lack of battery juice could surely cause the same sort of panic among EV drivers. In some case, even more strife than usual, as there’s no such thing as an electric Jerrycan (not yet, anyway). This phenomenon has been aptly dubbed “range anxiety” because it’s not like there’s an EV charging station on every corner, unlike the plentiful gas outlets.
