USA: Nissan hiring 300 in model shifts

More than 300 jobs could be created with production of Nissan’s Xterra and Frontier models shifting to Canton from Smyrna, Tenn.

Nissan last Wednesday announced it is moving production to Canton as the Smyrna plant is preparing to begin production of three new vehicles: the company’s new Infiniti JX model, the next-generation Rogue and Nissan LEAF.

“I am thrilled Nissan officials are adding two models to the production line-up at their Canton facility as a result of their plans to increase production in North America,” Gov. Haley Barbour said. “This decision is a testament to high quality work performed by the employees in Canton. I congratulate them.”

The move will drive Nissan’s localized production mix in the Americas from 69 percent to more than 85 percent by 2015. In total, the changes will increase Nissan’s production in the Americas by more than 50 percent – from 1.1 million units in 2010 to more than 1.7 million units in the coming years.
