USA: Ford Seeks Major Growth of Electric Sales

SHANGHAI–Ford Motor Co. aims for electric cars to account for 10%-25% of its car sales by 2020, up from just 1% currently, an official from the U.S. car maker said Monday at the Shanghai auto show.

Ford’s director of Global Electrification Nancy Gioia said at a news conference the auto maker is gearing up to launch the all-new Focus Electric in the U.S. later this year and C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid in 2012.

Its plan to introduce electric cars in China follows Beijing’s pledge in March to cut the country’s carbon intensity—the amount of carbon emitted per dollar of GDP—by 17% by 2015.

In a statement issued earlier Monday, Ford said the company also plans to bring a demonstration fleet of new-energy vehicles to showcase in China later this year, which will feature the gasoline-electric Ford Fusion Hybrid model.
