Montreal’s Southwest borough plugs in to future

The Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric car is displayed at the Montreal International Auto Show held at the Palais des Congrès in Montreal on Thursday, Jan. 13. The Southwest borough’s car will be used by an employee who works as a courier and racks up about 12,000 kilometres a year in stop-and-go driving.

Montreal’s Southwest borough is the first in the city to add an all-electric car to its fleet of vehicles.

It’s another step in the borough’s move toward sustainable development, borough mayor Benoit Dorais said yesterday.

“In the past year, we have launched several projects to improve the quality of air,” he said.

Electric vehicles are environment-friendly, said Dorais, adding that his administration is pushing property developers to include EV charging stations in their projects.

The proposed six-storey structure for Pixcom Productions on St. Patrick St. will have EV-charging stations, architect Sylvain Simard said.

It is not yet known if they will be rapid chargers of 400 volts or more.
