While there are a lot of good things about electric cars, one of the biggest drawbacks is the heavy load of batteries they must carry. But students at the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences are building a car that instead gets its power from the road. The power is delivered to the vehicle through cables embedded in the roadway using inductive charging, allowing a much lighter electric vehicle that does not need to haul a great mass of batteries. According to new research released by the Baker Institute at Rice University in Houston, Texas, an “aggressive campaign” to bring electric vehicles to market in the United States quickly and ensure their saturation would be “the single most effective way to reduce U.S. oil demand and foreign imports” between now and 2050. This conclusion comes even in the face of comparing it to other solutions such as a massive adoption of compressed natural gas vehicles, pushing an economy-wide renewable energy portfolio standard, and instituting some kind of overarching cap-and-trade carbon policy. At an Eaton event last week the major topics at hand had more to do with improving the fuel economy of conventional combustion vehicles than with plug-in cars. Yet, even though it felt a little strange to be a bit outside of my current passion for plug-ins, it was good to re-engage with the combustion world and get some perspective. Even though the electric car has great potential to revolutionize, well, just about everything for the better, it still has a long way to go before it can do that in the amounts necessary. More...
