Hello Electric Campaign Urges BP CEO Tony Hayward to Become an Electric Car Advocate

Where do disgraced executives go when the world hates their guts? While some waft on golden parachutes to a life of highly-compensated obscurity, others try their luck on Dancing With the Stars, hoping to ride their notoriety for all its worth.

Hello Electric, is a new Internet campaign urging ousted BP CEO Tony Hayward to become an advocate for clean cars when he leaves his post in just over two weeks.

According to the site, Hello Electric is challenging Hayward to “move ‘beyond petroleum’ and become an advocate for clean cars.
(Like how they even co-opted the BP slogan for their own purposes?) Once 25,000 people have signed the online petition, Hello Electric says they will hand-deliver a goodbye card wishing him bon voyage.

During Hayward’s time at the helm of the global energy giant, BP is alleged to have systematically and knowingly ignored numerous safety protocols aboard its Deepwater Horizon oil rig, that led to a blowout that spilled nearly 200 million gallons of crude into the Gulf of Mexico and killed 11 workers.

From the Hello Electric website:

You’ve seen first-hand the devastation caused by our global oil addiction. Now you’ve got more free time on your hands, we’re offering you the chance to truly move “beyond petroleum” by driving an electric car and encouraging the world to do the same.

To make it easy for you, we’ve picked out an awesome new electric car and paid the deposit. Once 25,000 people have signed this goodbye card, we’ll deliver it to you personally. Just think, you’ll never have to make an embarrassing trip to a gas station again!
Co-collaborators on the project include Project Get Ready, a plugin cars readiness program spearheaded by the Rocky Mountain Institute, Purpose.com, an online social movement incubator, as well as 350.org a climate change action network.

Electric cars, hybrid cars or even increased reliance on bicycling are just a few of the measures that could make impact in ending the oil addiction both in the U.S. and abroad.
