USA: Proterra supplies electric buses to S. California transit agency

Three electric buses made by Proterra Inc. at its Golden prototype manufacturing plant will start carrying passengers in the Los Angeles area on Sept. 7, the company announced Tuesday.

It’s the first commercial deployment of Proterra’s electric buses, according to the company.

The three EcoRide BE35 buses, plus two charging stations, are a $5.6 million order from Foothill Transit, said Jeff Granato, Proterra’s president and CEO.

If the buses and charging stations work well, Foothill can exercise its option to buy nine more buses from Proterra, Granato said.

The full order of 12 buses and two charging stations will total $17.5 million, he said.

“The option is dependant on how the original buses do, but their intention is to get the route electrified as quickly as possible,” Granato said. “The hope is that they can prove out the concept by the end of the year.”

Proterra’s electric buses will replace existing diesel buses in Foothill’s fleet, he said.

They’ll also help Foothill meet California regulations requiring large transit agencies to make “zero emission buses” 15 percent of their annual bus orders starting in 2012, Proterra said.
